The Innovation and Impact Network
World Environment Center

The Climate Innovation Challenge (CIC) is implemented by the World Environment Center (WEC) and its partners Núcleo Biotecnología Curauma (NBC) of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) and Baastel. This challenge is funded by the U.S. Department of State (DoS) through the 2021 Global Equity and Equality Fund (GEEA) of the Secretary's Office of Gender and Women's Affairs (S/GWI), and implemented by the Office of Policy Planning Coordination of the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs (WHA/PPC).

The Climate Innovation Challenge is part of the successful initiative to support the continuation and expansion of La Red de Innovación e Impacto (La RED) through the Empower Innovation Challenge, as an expansion strategy. The goal is to empower women-led micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the Latin American and Caribbean region for the sustainable growth of the green and blue economies, as well as to improve their capacity to face and adapt to climate change

The objective of the Climate Innovation Challenge is to provide grants to organizations that help MSMEs led by women in order to develop their capacities in climate resilience practices, build sustainable business models, and gain access to financing. The project will also aim to expand their environmentally friendly businesses by creating networks for access to new markets, mentoring, and microfinance services. In addition, the integration of MSMEs into the activities of La RED will help strengthen their capacities and sustainability. In addition, the integration of MSMEs into the activities of La RED will help strengthen their capacities and sustainability.

The incorporation of actions, programs and projects for mitigating greenhouse gases (GHG) and adapting to climate change requires monitoring the implementation of initiatives that positively impact beneficiary organizations, for which personalized consulting, training and educational opportunities will be provided, as well as tutoring and advisory services.

CIC

The project will: 1) accelerate the growth of local solutions to address climate change, 2) expand women-led MSMEs and employment in the LAC region, and 3) promote access to training, education, capital and microcredit, networking, and investment opportunities for women. This project will connect local MSMEs to international supply chains, particularly with the United States. Project activities focused on local solutions for MSMEs will help address the systemic barriers they face in the wake of the challenges brought by climate change.

A capacity building program will be included for the 10 organizations awarded by the CIC, which will contribute to the execution and success of their projects, as well as the development of their inclusive, sustainable, and innovation-oriented organizations. In addition, it will provide advice and guidance on how to strengthen small business models to address climate change and how MSMEs can work and contribute to a more stable, prosperous, and fair society. To reinforce the above, the CIC incorporates elements of democracy, governance and gender equality in the training program, which includes the prevention of gender-based violence in the workplace, the fight against corruption, transparency and advocacy strategies to promote and drive policies and laws that protect women with disabilities, indigenous, Afro-descendant, LGBTIQ+ and other minority and underrepresented communities.

Overview

The Central American Region has one of the highest levels of inequality in the world, with significant differences in living conditions between countries, regions, sectors, and socioeconomic spheres. Access to quality health services, education, and employment is limited for many people. The region also faces ongoing challenges related to high levels of social and political conflict, rising crime, corruption, deteriorating human rights, gender inequality, and numerous urgent humanitarian situations.

The combination of an economic slowdown in recent years and the projected climate change scenarios for the region are not optimistic and may worsen further. Central America is among the most vulnerable regions in the world to climate change. Issues such as decreased crop yields, the incidence of new pests and diseases in agriculture, increased numbers of tropical cyclones, intense droughts, wildfires, and increased rainfall intensity will become more frequent, especially affecting marginalized regions and people.

All of this indicates that climate change is creating new challenges, exacerbating the problem of underdevelopment in the region, increasing food insecurity, and causing migrations to urban areas and other countries offering safer conditions and a better quality of life.

The green economy is integral to GHG mitigation and climate change adaptation strategies. A project centered on the green economy addresses environmental aspects and can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by adopting clean technologies, enhancing energy efficiency, or fostering more sustainable agricultural practices. Therefore, the green economy emerges as a key strategy to combat climate change and move towards a more sustainable and resilient future.

Through the launch of the online competition, the Climate Innovation Challenge (CIC) will promote the implementation of promising solutions to the challenges of GHG mitigation and climate change adaptation, green economies, gender, labor, and migration issues in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). As part of the continuation and expansion of LA RED de Innovación e Impacto (La RED), an initiative that brings together organizations to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs) by promoting sustainable economic growth and prosperity in Latin America and the Caribbean.
